Sir John Fielding has been asked by the Lord Chief Magistrate to
investigate a magistrate in Kent. The man in question has been accused
of aiding smugglers in the area of Deal. Fielding is accompanied by
Jeremy Proctor, Clarissa Roundtree, and Constable Perkins. The latter is sent into Deal to
do some spying for Fielding. The former are to be guests of Sir Simon
Grenville.
The day following their arrival, a worker on Grenville's property is
found with his throat slashed. It is Clarissa who had discovered the
body, and it wasn't at the place where she found it when the local
magistrate, Fielding and Jeremy returned. Clarissa also informs Jeremy
that the victim had been bristling with weapons as if he had been
guarding something. What is going on at Grenville's estate?
A fracas with smugglers results in the death of a police constable and
the killing of the local magistrate in his home. The Lord Chief Justice
appoints Fielding to serve as temporary magistrate. Fielding brings a
couple of his Bow Street Runners down from London to assist him.
Fielding's plans are quickly set in motion. It will require plenty of
resources to capture the smugglers. How will their goal be achieved?
Author Bruce Alexander has provided the reader with another rollicking
adventure, well worth reading. I look forward to reading the sequel.
