St. Denis' police chief Bruno Courreges, has a problem on his
hands. The saw mill is being shut down due to new laws of the EU. The
people protesting are led by the son of the mill's owner. They have
been at odds with each other for years.
Bruno is also tasked with looking into truffles.
The area of Perigord has some of the best truffles in the world, but
unfortunately the Chinese are bringing I some of their poorer truffles
and mixing them in with the best.
When one of Bruno's friends is
murdered, national security forces come into play because the victim was
at one time involved in that kind of intrigue. But the question
remains, why the need to murder a retired man? Is his death tied into
the attacks on local Vietnamese stall owners? There is a gang war going
on in the area involving Vietnamese and Chinese gangs. Bruno looks for help from the national police.
As Bruno
and the national police put together their investigation, surprising
things come to the fore. A surprising conclusion awaits the reader.
Once again author Martin Walker has put together an intriguing novel
with plenty of suspense. I am looking forward to reading the next in
the series.
