Up the Down Staircase is a novel, written by a teacher, set in a
fictitious school in New York City. It gives the perspective of a new
teacher saddled with unruly students who she is trying to reach through
her teaching. Also included are thoughts of other teachers and the
students.
Written in 1963, Bel Kaufman's story still rings true 50 plus years later as any teacher can attest. A must read for teachers.
